Oak Harbor wins again

Wildcats sweep Arlington, keep playoffs a reality

It wasn’t pretty, but beauty didn’t matter when it was said and done.

The Oak Harbor baseball team defeated Arlington 2-0 on Wednesday night, taking its fifth game in its last six attempts.

“The kids are just playing well,” OHHS head coach Jim Waller said. “We’re playing solid baseball, we’re not real flashy or anything, we’re just playing well enough to win.”

Oak Harbor struggled at the plate on Wednesday, getting only three hits the entire game.

“That was probably the first time we haven’t had a good offensive game all year,” Waller said.

Oak Harbor scored the lone runs of the game during the bottom of the third on a balk with the bases loaded from Arlington pitcher Joey Dettrich, followed by a wildpitch from Dettrich that scored Marshall Lobbestael from third.

“That was disappointing that we didn’t get any in by getting hits,” Waller said.

Fortunately for the Wildcats, they made up for their offensive woes with pitching and solid defense.

Starter Camden Schutte was nearly flawless in his performance on the mound. He went a complete seven innings, striking out four and walking four. He only gave up three hits for the game, two of which came in the final inning.

“I was throwing pretty well,” the senior said. “I was leaving my curveball up quite a bit, but I got it there in the sixth and was able to get it to work for me.

I was hitting my spots, that’s the biggest thing for me.”

OHHS also had some solid defense, turning a crucial double play in the fourth.

Sophomore catcher Ernie Martinez played his first full game behind the plate at the varsity level, forced into action as regular catcher Mike Bighouse took a loose ball off his eye before the game.

“I told Ernie ‘I might start calling pitches and we’ll see how you do’ — I didn’t call one pitch,” Waller said.

Lobbestael was 2-for-3 for Oak Harbor with a triple and a single. The only other hit was a single from Schutte.

Oak Harbor started out bumpy on the road Tuesday afternoon, but the Wildcats were quick to recover.

Falling behind 3-0, pitcher Brendan Kays settled down over the final five innings, allowing just one more hit and no runs.

OHHS took a 4-3 lead in the fifth on RBI singles from Jake Jansen and Cameron Kays.

Lobbestael had an RBI triple, Bryce Waller had a two-run double and Schutte added an RBI single the next inning to pull away for good.

Oak Harbor is now 5-5 in league and 8-5 overall. They hosted Stanwood yesterday and are on the road Tuesday, May 3 against the Spartans.
