Oak Harbor’s annual Night Out promotes community-police partnerships

National Night Out is always a big deal in Oak Harbor, but this year may be a bigger deal than ever.

The Oak Harbor Fire Department’s “burn house” was a big hit last year and will be even bigger this year. Navy security is planning a “cuffing station” for kids, which seems destined to be popular.

And there will be a helicopter landing, children’s activities and food.

The event is 3:30-7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 2 at Fort Nugent Park.

National Night Out is a nationwide community-building event that promotes community-police partnerships. In Oak Harbor, it’s a large, fun-filled event each year that involves first responders of all sorts.

This year, the Oak Harbor police and the Oak Harbor Lions Club worked together to organize the festivities.

“It’s a chance for people to meet first responders and get a look at the equipment in a non-emergency situation,” Oak Harbor Police Officer Nathan Padrta said.

It’s also a way for law enforcement officers, firefighters and other first responders to thank the community for its support, he added.

Police and fire departments on the island will be involved, which means plenty of cool trucks and police cars for people to explore. Border Patrol will bring a helicopter again this year.

Washington State Patrol and Navy security will have demonstrations with police dogs. There will be three different rescue boats to peruse.

The event will have plenty of food vendors, including a snow-cone maker.

The Oak Harbor mayor, the county sheriff and the base commander are scheduled to speak to the crowd, beginning at 5 p.m.
