A group of Whidbey’s best barbecuers will be busy this weekend cooking 2,000 pounds of pork to hand out free to hungry islanders.

Organizers hope that will be enough to feed the hundreds of people who will attend the annual Fidalgo Avenue Block Party and Pig Roast that takes place Sunday, Aug. 12, near downtown Oak Harbor in front of Frasers Gourmet Hideaway.

“It just keeps on getting busier and busier every year,” said Scott Fraser, owner of Frasers. He has organized the popular pig roast every year. He said the 2,000 pounds for 2012 represents 500 pounds more pork than the previous year. Last year, cooks ran out of food.

While the day features a wonderful spread of food where people line up down the block waiting for their meal, there will be several additions to the party.

The block party will include an amateur home brewing contest, which will be organized in conjunction with Whidbey Island Homebrewing Supplies, Fidalgo Avenue’s newest business that will soon serve the needs of beer aficionados up and down Whidbey Island.

As always, amateur and professionals will vie to see who is the island’s best barbecuer.

In its competitive third year, both professionals and amateurs compete in different types of barbecue. So far six pros — Smoke Tree Barbecue, JD’s Barbecue, Holy Cow Barbecue, Oak Harbor Tavern and Two Hogs and a Rooster — have signed up for the competitive cook-off.

Smoke Tree Barbecue owner Roger Anglum, who won the contest in the first year, said he hopes to unseat two-time winner JD’s Barbecue this year.

“JD’s got a target on his back,” Anglum joked.

The free party also features live music, a beer garden and a variety of children’s activities, ranging from a paper airplane contest to a bouncy house.

Fraser started the block party five years ago as a way to thank the community for supporting his gourmet restaurant and to provide a fun activity that will get families outdoors on a Sunday afternoon.

The block party is free but people are encourage to make a donation by dropping cash into several large piggy banks.

Fraser said that the donations will help cover costs that aren’t met by sponsors. Leftover donations will be given to local nonprofits. Half of the money raised will benefit North Whidbey Help House. The other half of the money will be spread among Youth Dynamics, Safety Net of Oak Harbor and Whidbey Island Share a Home.
