Snapping out of season-long scoring slump, the Coupeville soccer team stopped Sultan 3-2 at Mickey Clark Field Thursday, Sept. 26.

The Wolves entered the game winless and with only one goal in the first four matches but exploded to capture new head coach Troy Cowan’s first win.

A formation change by Cowan produced positive results.

Among the moves, he shifted Makana Stone to midfield and Micky LeVine to striker.

“Both Makana and Micky adjusted well and both made huge impacts to the match. Micky was all over the pitch last night, seemingly involved in every scoring opportunity,” Cowan said.

LeVine drew a foul in the box that led to a Jennifer Spark goal off the penalty kick and assisted a Stone goal with a header.

“I’m not sure if she (LeVine) reminded my of Mighty Mouse or Mickey Mouse, but one thing for sure, she played like a beast last night,” Cowan said.

Tori Wellman scored the first goal on a fine assist by Erin Rosenkranz.

Julia Myers handled the goal for the Wolves and “played her most complete match,” Cowan said.

She received defensive help from sisters Ivy and Ana Luvera who “turned away offensive run after offensive run from Sultan,” Cowan added.

“Overall, the girls played well and rose to the occasion,” Cowan said. “I told them to enjoy the win but to remain humble and to not lose focus of our goals. We still have a long way to go to reach our potential, but the win felt great and the girls are one step closer to reaching their goals.”

Coupeville (1-3, 1-4) goes to first-place Archbishop Murphy (4-0, 6-0) at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28.
