Graduation for Oak Harbor High School seniors is around the corner and the public can attend events surrounding the celebration.
Graduation is set for 6 p.m., Monday, June 13 at the high school’s stadium. Gates open at 4:45 p.m.
Families of graduates receive seven tickets for the best seats, but anyone can attend for free, said Principal Dwight Lundstrom.
Everyone in the main seating section must have a ticket — even babies in laps.
Seniors with family attending who need disabled seating should could call 360-279-5717 by end of the school day June 10 to arrange in advance, he said. Lundstrom also reminds spectators that the stadium gates are closed briefly at 5:55 p.m. during the procession.
The event is taking place regardless of weather so dress warmly. Even if it’s sunny, prepare for chilly temperatures when the sun drops, Lundstrom said.
The high school no longer holds the ceremony in the gym because seating was limited.
Every year it’s been held it outside the weather has held, but the principal thinks perhaps his luck might not hold one more year.
In case it rains, he’s purchased clear, plastic rain ponchos for the graduates.
Every class seems to have its own personality. The principal describes the Class of 2016 as a “high-achieving group” that excelled in academics, athletics and in the school’s technical programs.
“They have been a great group of kids to work with the entire time,” he said. “They’ve led each other well and the rest of the school.”
Other events include a district band festival at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 7, at the high school. It’s free.
Parents of Oak Harbor seniors can attend a traditional toss by the students of all those papers they slaved over. The paper toss is scheduled for after the school bell rings at 2:15 p.m., Thursday, June 9, at the high school student union building.
