An Oak Harbor woman showing multiple indicators of intoxication was arrested Tuesday after causing a car accident on Highway 20, according to a police report.
Prosecutors charged Cassandra Mae Ellen Lancaster, 37, in Island County Superior Court Oct. 19 with vehicular assault, court documents indicate.
Washington State Patrol reported that Lancaster was driving south on Highway 20 around 4 p.m. Oct. 18 with her three children, ranging in ages from 4 to 12 years old. According to a witness, Lancaster turned left onto Miller Road, directly in front of a northbound car, the police report states.
The oncoming car, driven by 24-year-old Anisa Thompson of Mukilteo, struck the side of Lancaster’s vehicle, the report states. The witness told investigating officers that Lancaster initially drove away from the scene, then returned shortly after and parked on the shoulder.
Thompson was transported to WhidbeyHealth with a broken arm after the crash. Lancaster and her three children were not injured. Both vehicles were totaled, the State Patrol reported.
A state trooper reported that Lancaster showed several signs of intoxication, including slurred speech, trouble forming a coherent sentence, difficulty balancing while walking and standing and a noticeable “odor of intoxication,” according to court documents. The trooper asked Lancaster whether she’d been drinking; Lancaster said she’d had a shot earlier in the day but would never drink and drive with her kids in the car, the report states.
Lancaster refused to perform a number of field sobriety tests, the report states. The trooper served a warrant to obtain blood samples from Lancaster for toxicology testing.
Lancaster was released from jail on her own recognizance.
