Two well-known members of the Freeland community were involved in a high-speed, alcohol-related accident on South Whidbey Tuesday night, according to State Patrol Sgt. Jason Longoria.

The State Patrol reported that 47-year-old Leroy Olsen was driving an Audi R8 south on Goss Lake Road, lost control at a bend in the road, left the roadway and struck a phone pedestal, finally coming to rest after hitting a tree.

The passenger, 43-year-old Kimberly Blain, was seriously injured and transported to Whidbey General Hospital with a broken pelvis, Longoria said. Olsen was also transported to the hospital, where he was treated and released.

The Audi R8, a very expensive sports car, was totalled in the accident.

Longoria said Olsen was arrested on suspicion of vehicular assault, a felony charge, and booked into the Island County jail. The trooper said both alcohol and speed were contributing factors in the accident.

Olsen is known on South Whidbey for putting on fireworks displays in Holmes Harbor for the Fourth of July holiday. Blain owns Payless Foods in Freeland.
