Open up to the light

Historic doors are now open for business at the Admiralty Head Lighthouse. The 200 year-old lighthouse began its regular season earlier this month and now the historic structure will be more available throughout the summer to visitors who come from around the world to see the lighthouse.

During the spring, the lighthouse will be open Fridays through Saturdays, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. during March, April and May. When the temperatures rise, the light house will be open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. seven days a week during June, July and August.

The white bluffs of Admiralty Head were first observed by Capt. George Vancouver in 1792. And shortly after American settlers claimed the area, a wood-framed lighthouse stood at Admiralty Head by 1903 (although down the bluff from today’s lighthouse site). The structure was replaced with an elegant Spanish-style stucco lighthouse in 1903, the same structure that remains today.

The Admiralty Head Lighthouse is open to the public through a cooperative agreement between Fort Casey State Park and the WSU/Island County Beach Watchers, Waste Wise volunteers, as well as numerous community volunteers.

There is always a need for more volunteers at the lighthouse. The Keepers of the Lighthouse, as the docents are known, give tours and guidance to the hundreds of visitors who come to Admiralty Head each year.

This year, the lighthouse will feature more displays of early lighthouse history, as well as refreshed displays about the fort Casey area.

For more information about the lighthouse, including how to volunteer, call Gloria Wallin at 240-5584 or visit www.admiraltyhead.wsu.edu.
