The new Miss Oak Harbor is Mara Powers, a top student at Oak Harbor High School.
She took top honors at the second annual Miss Oak Harbor Scholarship Pageant held Saturday at the high school. She is the daughter of Steve and River Powers.
Sophomore Baelee Whitinger was named Teen Miss Oak Harbor, a new division at the pageant for 9th and 10th graders. She is the daughter of Kevin and Marsha Whitinger.
“It was amazing,” said director Jes Walker-Wyse. “The vibe and energy of the contestants was different. They were so committed.”
This is the second year of the pageant, which was created to foster confidence and poise under pressure — not looks. The pageant includes traditional elements such as a choreographed dance number and onstage interview. But the young women also were graded on elements such as community service and work experience. They spent six weeks together preparing.
Nineteen young women competed for a title and hundreds of dollars in scholarship money. The girls were a diverse group that includes equestrians, athletes and aspiring businesswomen.
Powers took home a $2,500 scholarship and a total $8,800 of scholarship money was awarded. The contestants each enlisted a local business sponsor. Mara, who works at the Chamber of Commerce, was sponsored by chamber director Christine Cribb.
Her responsibilities include community service work and attending public events, such as Holland Happening.
