Two Central Whidbey runners were among the six winners of the Sixth Annual Race the Reserve Saturday, Aug. 13, in Coupeville.
Coupeville graduate Andre Stone, 23, led the field of 74 in the 5K, winning in 17:07.6. Coupeville’s Helene Lhamon, 45, was first among women in the 10K, placing ninth overall out of 100 in 52:18.9.
Proceeds from Race the Reserve, sponsored by the Parents of the Coupeville High School Class of 2017, go toward safe and sober graduation night activities for CHS seniors.
The event included half marathon, 10K and 5K runs.
“The race went well,” director Jenny Carroll said. “Turn out was good.”
Carroll was aided by a group of 55 volunteers, which included “parents of CHS students in the class of 2017 and other classes, students of CHS and the middle school, and adults with no students, including some from the Navy,” she said.
The trio of races were competed in 80-degree weather, wilting some of the runners. Carroll said the organizers will add more water stops in the future to help combat dehydration.
Carroll mentioned several other changes she would like to see implemented in the future.
Signs that mark the course need to be larger and bolder.
“Near the end of the race, runners are very tired and need directions they can’t miss,” she said.
Offering on-site registration and packet pickup the day before the race and not just the morning of will help the crush of pre-race activities, she said.
Carroll would also like to see the event expanded to include a full marathon and marathon relay.
This year, 275 runners finished one of the three races, down from 343 in 2015.
A couple of British Columbian runners paced the field of 101 in the half marathon. Ryan Prachnau of Abbotsford led the way by covering the hilly course in 1:19:56.3. Bianca Gonzales of Surrey was the first female to finish, running 1:42:26, good for 12th overall.
The 10K was won by Mercer Island’s Singh Navdeep, 27, in 45:32.5, followed by Coupeville’s Sean LeVine (45:37.1).
Coupeville High School’s Henry Wynn, 16, was second to Stone in the 5K (17:19.2). Bremerton’s Elizabeth Roth was the first female finisher and seventh overall in 22:22.9.
