I attended my first North Whidbey Parks and Recreation District meeting April 15. I’m 23 years old, and found that most of the citizens were at least twice my age. I came excited to see how the meetings went, and learn from the older generation.
I was appalled by the behavior of those attending the meeting. When two of the five commissioners decided to walk out, I was shocked. How is the younger generation to learn how to solve problems and disagreements the right way, when these people of elected power walk out when they disagree with something?
I was also stunned at the behavior of the citizens that night. They were screaming and yelling at the commissioners. Threatening and belittling people is not the way to conduct yourself in a public meeting. Not only were the citizens unbelievable, but the park and rec director yelling profanities at the commissioners was outrageous.
The citizens who attended last Tuesday’s meeting should be embarrassed at their behavior. I hope next time you attend a meeting, you think before you speak, because the younger generation will follow in your footsteps unless SHOWN otherwise.
