A 31-year-old Coupeville woman died after being struck by a dump truck while trying to cross Highway 20 at an accident-prone intersection on Central Whidbey Wednesday afternoon.

The Washington State Patrol reported that the pedestrian, Melody L. Golgart, succumbed to her injury while being airlifted to Providence Medical Center in Everett.

The accident closed the highway in the Coupeville area for a couple of hours as medical personnel, firefighters and traffic investigators converged on the scene.

The State Patrol reported that 39-year-old Carisssa Peters of Greenbank was driving a 2011 Volvo dump truck with a trailer south on the highway. Golgart was struck while trying to cross the highway at the intersection with Northwest Broadway Street.

Peters and her passenger were not injured.

The accident was reported at 2:48 p.m. The Washington State Patrol reported that the highway was back open at about 5 p.m.

Neither drugs nor alcohol were factors in the collision, according to the report.

Golgart is the third pedestrian to be killed at the intersection since 2016, but it’s better known in recent years for less-serious car accidents.

In the last five years, 15 accidents were reported at the busy intersection, with four resulting in minor injuries, according to data from the state Department of Transportation. The majority of accidents occurred during the daylight.
