Caleb Peek placed first and the Oak Harbor High School Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps team second at the Navy Orienteering Championship Invitational Meet in Spanaway Lake last weekend.

Peek won the national individual title by nearly eight minutes over Michael Rodgers of Georgia’s Henry County High School.

Henry County, however, claimed the team tile.

The team standings were determined by the combined scores of the varsity and JV teams.

Henry County finished first in both the varsity and JV divisions. Oak Harbor, coached by Marc deLeuze, was second in varsity competition and third in JV.

Individual competition was spread over three divisions for both boys and girls: intermediate (ninth-graders), JV (ninth- through 12th-grader) and varsity (ninth- through 12th-graders).

Oak Harbor placed well throughout the divisions:

Varsity boys: 1, Peek; 17, Joe Gilham.

Varsity girls: 3, Autumn Coker; 20, Callie Nuttall.

JV boys: 6, Thomas Gilham; 28, Alex Hartley; 42, David Clark.

JV girls: 3, Abigail Rosencrans; 4, Megan Peek.

Intermediate boys: 3, Mason Scroggin; 4, Jesie Newsom; 14, Aaron Martinez; 26, Alex Christofferson.

Intermediate girls: 11, Danielle Lonborg.

Caleb Peek, Megan Peek, Coker, Rosencrans, Newsom, Scroggin and Thomas Gilham all medaled.

Competing for the Oak Harbor varsity were Caleb Peek, Coker, Joe Gilham, Nuttall and Kelly Holt.

The Wildcat junior varsity included Thomas Gilham, Megan Peek, Hartley, Clark and Rosencrans.

“We had a great weekend,” deLeuze said. “Great showing for only our second trip ever to nationals.”

Last year Peek placed fifth and the team finished ninth.
