Approximately 250-300 children and parents gathered to celebrate Halloween at the Fleet Reserve Association. Although too numerous to mention individually, the American Legion and Fleet Reserve would like to extend a sincere thank you to those in our community who donated and made the event possible. Both organizations are looking forward to serving the community again!

The Oak Harbor Duplicate Bridge Club that meets every Friday at Summerhill, had a pumpkin pie contest. Seven pies were judged (all were absolutely delicious) but an outside judge impartially chose Mary Ann Hartman’s as the best. Her prize: free play for a month. The pies were all quickly devoured.

Dolores and Adolph Meisch of Oak Harbor attended Dolores’ Anacortes Class of 1946 reunion at Randy’s Pier 61 recently. Three valedictorians were present among the crowd.

Margaret Jedele is in San Antonio visiting with her son and family, the Keith Jedeles. She plans to be back in the Northwest in April.

Three couples from Oak Harbor, Ken and Helen Bates, Betty and Glyn Tewes and Jan and Henry Morgan, Helen’s sister- and brother-in-law, Dolores and Rupert Dorn of Seattle, and a friend from Austria, Ewald Hasch, enjoyed a September cruise aboard the Dawn Princess. It was an exciting time when their ship answered an SOS from a Canadian gillnetter foundering in gale force winds.

The ship made a four and a half hour detour to reach the endangered boat. With a yellow Canadian Coast Guard plane circling overhead, the lone fisherman was welcomed onto the Dawn Princess by the cruise passengers. His boat was left to toss in deep rolling waters. A week later the Bates escorted 41 seniors on a four day cruise from Vancouver to Sitka, Alaska, and back.

Lisa and Chip Hilardis of Bellingham spent the weekend at their Sunset Beach cabin on North Whidbey. They just returned from a 10-day trip to Holland, Mich.

Paris Amaya Quinn was born Oct. 17 to Warren and Cindy Quinn. The new little girl weighed 6 pounds 15 ounces.

Worry is like sitting in a rocking chair. It gives you something to do, but you don’t get anywhere!

Virginia Pajari is in Manila, the Philippines, with her daughter Lynne and expects to be home for the new year.
