PEOPLE & PLACES: Family news comes to us every day

The Mouw family is proud of its recent addition. The longtime island family has been celebrating weddings, wedding anniversaries and new arrivals. With the birth of Madeline Elizabeth Mouw, the family can boast of five generations present.

Nick Moran, a 1997 Coupeville High School graduate, received his bachelor’s of arts degree in business administration from Western Washington University Aug. 24. He leaves this month for Los Angeles where he will pursue a career in the film industry. Nick is the son of Teri and Tim Switalski of Oak Harbor and Mike Moran of Santa Cruz, Calif., and extended family Traynor and Petite Hunt of Coupeville.

Laurie Ferrell of Coupeville and Julie Paggao and Michael Thacker of Oak Harbor were named to Columbia College’s summer Dean’s List.

Army Pvt. Michael Lopez has graduated from basic infantry training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga. He is the son of Rayette Higgins of Oak Harbor and is a 2000 graduate of Oak Harbor High School.

Navy Lt. Cmdr. Robert Buzzell has been selected for promotion to commander. He recently reported to Naval War College, Newport, R.I., as a military professor. His is the son of Ralph and Penny Buzzell of Oak Harbor. He earned a master’s degree in 1999 from the University of Oklahoma and a doctorate in 2001 from Oklahoma State University.

Alicia Lamczyk has graduated from Army ROTC National Advanced Leadership Camp at Fort Lewis. She is the daughter of Jeanne Lamczyk of Oak Harbor and in 1999 graduated from Oak Harbor High School.

Army Pvt. William Carroll has graduated from basic infantry training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga. He is the son of Robert and Nimfa Carroll of Oak Harbor and is a 2001 graduate of Oak Harbor High School.

Impaired Impact Driving Panel needs speakers. Speakers change each month and so does the audience, which consists mostly of people from Island County who have committed the offense of driving under the influence, minor in possession or negligent driving that is alcohol or drug-related. They are required to attend a DUI panel presentation as part of their sentence or deferred prosecution agreement.

The heart of this heart-to-heart program is the speakers, and more speakers are needed.

IDIPIC speakers can be anyone who has been injured in a DUI crash has had a family member injured or killed in a DUI crash has caused a DUI crash with injury and /or fatality works with DUI victims or offenders has several years of sobriety

All prospective speakers are asked to attend at least one IDIPIC presentation to get a feel for the format. Panelists can choose to speak once a month, or once a year.
