Organizers of the Oak Harbor Pigfest are bracing for another large turnout after attendance ballooned last year when the event moved to a new, more visible location.
About 8,000 people attended Pigfest on Pioneer Way, doubling the previous year’s attendance on Fidalgo Avenue.
Preparing for the unexpected, Pigfest organizers are seeking more volunteers to help with setup, teardown and other tasks involved with the event, including serving food and manning information booths.
“We’re looking for greater participation from the community this year,” said Skip Pohtilla, one of the event’s organizers. “We need a lot of volunteers to help out, especially with the breakdown at the end.”
Pigfest will take place from noon until 5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 9, along Pioneer Way in Oak Harbor.
The event is highlighted by a free pulled pork meal, which also includes a salad, cole slaw, roll and macaroni salad.
However, fun and entertainment also is a part of the event. A rock climbing wall, wobbly water ball attraction, clowns, balloon artist and comedian will be featured this year to entertain children and adults.
Pigfest organizers are looking for community help on the days leading up to the event, during the event itself and the day that follows.
“The more hands we have the quicker the work goes,” said Melissa Riker, who’s helping with volunteer coordination.
