An Oak Harbor woman was killed Saturday afternoon when an experimental aircraft crashed nose first in a field just south of Stanwood city limits.

The Snohomish Sheriff’s Office reported that 54-year-old Ann Price of Camano Island was flying the plane, lost power and tried to land in a field, but ended up crashing. She and her niece, a 34-year-old Oak Harbor woman, were both pronounced dead at the scene.

The Snohomish County Medical Examiner had not released the name of the Oak Harbor woman as of Tuesday afternoon, pending positive identification and family notification.

Price, who owned the experimental fixed-wing aircraft, had been talking to her husband shortly before the crash and had told him the plane was losing power or had lost power. Price and her passenger had left nearby Arlington Airport and were headed for Camano Island where the pilot had a private airstrip on her property, according to a press release from the Snohomish Sheriff’s Office.

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the cause of the accident.
