The State Patrol is asking for public assistance in solving what Trooper Mark Brown describes as a “bizarre situation.”

Brown said the incident occurred Thursday, April 11 at 8:48 p.m. on Highway 20 at the Sleeper Road intersection.

Oak Harbor resident Sarah Huff was driving her 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse, following what she remembered only as a “boxy white car.” The driver of that car slammed on its brakes without warning and tried turning left onto Sleeper.

Huff tried to stop her car but had no time, according to Trooper Brown. Her Eclipse struck the turning car in the wheel well area, causing it to rise up and land momentarily on top of her car’s front end. The white car bounced back down and then sped off, going up Sleeper Road at what witnesses described as “a high rate of speed.”

Brown examined Huff’s badly damaged vehicle and found an odd piece of metal sticking out of the radiator. It appeared to be a six-inch piece of rebar, perhaps part of some home repair job done to the boxy white car. “It didn’t look factory made,” said Brown.

Brown and other officers searched the area for the mysterious boxy white car. He said Huff was shaken up but not injured, which is fortunate for the driver of the white car. “It’s not a felony, but it could have been,” he said. The driver is wanted for hit-and-run.

Police are seeking information about the boxy white car. “There should be some substantial damage,” Brown said. Trooper Brown can be reached at 675-0710 .
