The first half was a shootout and the second half a shutout for the Coupeville High School football team in its 56-20 loss at Port Townsend Friday, Oct. 10.
The loss dropped the Wolves’ Olympic League record to 2-2 (3-3 overall) and allowed Port Townsend (3-1, 4-2) to keep pace with Klahowya (3-1, 3-3) at the top of the standings with two conference games left.
Coupeville handed Port Townsend its only league loss, 29-21, Sept. 26.
The Wolves will try to snap their two-game losing skid when they head to Chimacum at 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17. Coupeville defeated the winless Cowboys (0-4, 0-6) 48-24 Sept. 19.
In last Friday’s game, Coupeville and the Redhawks each scored early, but as the game wore on, the Wolves’ offense wore out.
Each team scored twice in the first quarter, making it 14-14, then Port Townsend, up 28-21, scored just before the break and never looked back.
The Redhawks tacked on two scores in the third quarter and another in the fourth and blanked the Wolves over the final two periods to roll to the win.
Port Townsend was aided by three interceptions, two by Ezra Easley, who returned one for a touchdown.
The Redhawks also returned a punt for a score.
For the second straight week, Coupeville’s opponent put the brakes on the Wolves’ rushing attack.
In the win over Port Townsend earlier this season, Coupeville rushed for 376 yards. Friday, the Wolves mustered 123. Josh Bayne picked up most of those, 61 on 17 carries, for one touchdown. Jacob Martin had 33 yards in four rushes.
Bayne ran for 144 yards the first meeting.
Lathom Kelley, who burned the Redhawks for 186 yards in the first game, did not play this time around because of an injury.
Joel Walstad completed 16 of 32 passes for 157 yards and a touchdown; he also had one carry for a touchdown.
Boyne threw once, a 43-yard completion to Ryan Griggs, who finished with four catches for 92 yards. Bayne caught five passes for 51 yards, and Wiley Hesselgrave grabbed three for 39.
Bayne was the defensive leader with 13 tackles, 10 solo.
Hesselgrave added 10 tackles; Oscar Liquidano had seven.
Isaac Vargas and Aaron Wright each recovered a fumble.
The Wolves will need to win their final two league games to stay in the hunt for a playoff spot. The top two teams qualify for the postseason.
After going to Chimacum this Friday, Coupeville will host Klahowya at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24.
The Wolves complete the regular season with a nonleague game at Concrete at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31.
