Primary forum set for Monday

Whidbey Island voters can learn more about candidates who will appear on the Aug. 2 primary ballot.

Whidbey Island voters can learn more about candidates who will appear on the Aug. 2 primary ballot from an upcoming virtual program.

The League of Women Voters of Whidbey Island will host an online candidates’ forum at 7 p.m. on Monday, July 11. The forum will feature candidates for District 10 state House of Representatives and the District 3 Island County commissioner position.

The Zoom link to the forum will be posted on the League’s website, www.lwvwhidbey.org, one day in advance of the event.

The three candidates for county commissioner will be winnowed to two in the primary election. Commissioner Janet St. Clair, a Democrat, is facing Republicans Rick Hannold and Tim Hazelo. St. Clair is a Camano Island resident while Hannold and Hazelo live on North Whidbey.

Hannold was a one-term county commissioner who lost to St. Clair four years ago. Hazelo is the chairperson of the Island County Republican Party.

The candidates for state representative for District 10, which covers Whidbey Island, will make it through the “top two” primary, but the election results may give them a good sense of where they stand going into the general election.

Rep. Dave Paul, a Democrat from Oak Harbor, will face Republican Karen Lesetmoe of Oak Harbor.

In the other race, Rep. Greg Gilday, a Republican from Stanwood, is facing Oak Harbor resident Clyde Shavers, a Democrat.

The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan, political organization for both women and men that encourages the informed and active participation of citizens in government and influences public policy through education and advocacy. The league does not support any candidates or political parties, but provides objective information.

Primary ballots will be in the mail by July 15.
