From Coupeville to Clinton, Whidbey Island will be “occupied” Saturday, Nov. 5.

Whidbey Islanders sympathetic to the Occupy Wall Street movement, which has spread to cities around the world, will stand in solidarity at two rallies, the first at the Clinton Ferry Terminal from 10 a.m. to noon, and the second in Coupeville at the intersection of Highway 20 and Main Street from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The national theme is “Make Them Pay,” and the local message is “Move Your Money” to local banks and credit unions, said Carolyn Tamler, the council organizer for MoveOn Whidbey.

“We on Whidbey share the national concern for the growing inequality of wealth in our country and the recklessness of the banking industry,” Tamler said in a release. “Moving our checking and savings accounts, and our mortgages, from too-big-to-fail banks to smaller financial institutions helps keep local money in local communities.”

Tamler invited all to participate at the rallies.  “People can make their own signs or simply join others standing in solidarity,” she said.
