Every January, the League of Women Voters of Whidbey Island sponsors a brunch, open to the public, and invites our legislators to talk about the coming legislative session. Press releases are sent to newspapers several weeks in advance and titled “Legislative Brunch.” This title is significant because of the League’s nonpartisan stance.

In the December “On Whidbey,” however, the headline for this brunch included the name of one of the legislators. This was not in keeping with the League’s policy. To the editor’s credit, when advised of the error, she quickly offered to print a correction. The error, however, does indicate a general lack of understanding. Nonpartisans sponsored by the League are not determined by a political party but by objective research and consensus of its members. For this reason, the League does not endorse candidates or any political party. The League does, after study and consensus, take informed positions on public policy issues, and these positions form the basis for the League’s political action.

The League sponsors forums to educate the public on a variety of issues. At such events, the League strives to present unbiased information or allow candidates to speak for themselves so that voters may make their own decisions.
