Records fall as Blue Heron open long course season | NWAC

The North Whidbey Aquatic Club began the long course season at the West Coast Open in Richmond, B.C., last weekend and came away with five new team records.

Eight Blue Heron attended and Haley Borja set three NWAC records in the girls 8-and-under division (50 free, 36.53; 50 back, 43.85; 400 IM, 7:29.82), while Alana Miller (girls 9/10 200 back, 3:04.08) and Lola Chargualaf (girls 9/10 200 fly, 3:38.99) also set new marks.

Ashleigh Merrill was NWAC’s most consistent top finisher in the meet by placing seventh of better in each of her events, including second in the girls 12/13 50 free (29.64), according to coach Dick Taylor.

Merrill and Borja were named NWAC’s Swimmers of the Meet.

The Blue Heron also clocked four new USA Swimming A or better times.

Miller earned her first AAA time in the 100 back (1:25.08); Lea Opdyke recorded her first AA time in the 200 free (2:49.25); and Chargualaf added her first A times (50 free, 41.3; 100 free, 1:35.29).

Chargualaf and Lecya Santiago, who set five personal bests, were named NWAC’s Most Improved Swimmers of the Meet.

NWAC’s two other competitors, Jasmine Borja (200 free, 2:46.33) and Grace Chargualaf (50 free, 36.58), swam personal bests.
