Coupeville High School scored the first and last goal, but Port Townsend scored three in between to edge the Wolves 3-2 Thursday, April 30, at Mickey Clark Field.
The win helped the Redhawks jump past Coupeville into second place in the Olympic League standings with two matches left. The top two teams earn home matches in the first round of the playoffs.
The Wolves, however, can finish no lower than third and have locked up a postseason spot.
Klahowya (3-0, 10-1-2) leads the Olympic League 1A standings. Port Townsend is 2-1 (3-6-2), Coupeville 2-2 (3-7) and Chimacum 0-4 (1-11).
After a home nonleague match with Charles Wright Academy at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, May 2, the Wolves host Klahowya at 5 p.m. Monday, May 4, and travel to Port Townsend at 5 p.m. Wednesday, May 6.
Sebastian Davis scored twice for Coupeville in Thursday’s loss to Port Townsend.
He tallied the match’s first a goal midway through the first half off a rebound from a free kick by Abraham Leyva Elenes.
The Redhawks countered with three goals, two in the second half, before Davis scored again off a Leyva Elenes rebound with eight minutes left.
The last few minutes “were exciting,” Coupeville coach Kyle Nelson said, as the Wolves fought to tie up the match.
“Will Nelson had a real good attempt go just over the goal with just a few minutes left,” coach Nelson said. “Real good game, great effort from the boys.”
Coupeville is dealing with a handful of injuries, and Nelson is hoping to get several of the players back shortly.
Loren Nelson and Keegan Korteum are out with hamstring injuries. Nelson could be back next week, coach Nelson said, while Korteum may return by the end of the season. Joel Walstad is out with a calf injury but is expected to return next week.
Aaron Wright (ankle) and Zane Bundy (leg) are out for the season, Nelson said.
