The Port Townsend High School volleyball team defeated host Coupeville 3-1 Thursday, Oct.30, claiming one of the three allotted Olympic League playoff spots and bringing an end to the Wolves’ season.
The Redhawks (3-3, 9-5) won 25-16, 14-25, 25-19, 25-19.
Coupeville (1-5, 1-11) needed to win the match to create a three-way tie for second with Port Townsend and Chimacum (2-4, 4-9) and force a mini-tournament to determine who would be playoff bound.
Klahowya (7-0, 14-0) won the conference title.
After dropping the first game, Coupeville settled in for a convincing 11-point win in the second set, pulling away late.
The Wolves battled to a 14-12 lead in the third game, but the Redhawks went on an 8-1 run to go up 20-15. Coupeville was within two, 21-19, before Port Townsend finished with a flourish.
In the fourth set, Coupeville scooted to a 5-1 lead. After the Redhawks tied it at 5, the game remained close until PT went up 18-14. From there, the Wolves could not cut the deficit to less than three.
The two teams played two days earlier, with the Redhawks winning 3-2. Coupeville coach Breanne Smedley said that the strategy in the rematch was to attack.
The Redhawks did a good job covering Coupeville’s continuous onslaught.
“We had a hard time finding open spots and exploiting the defense,” Smedley said.
The match was the final contest for Coupeville seniors McKayla Bailey, who was out with an injury, Hailey Hammer, Kacie Kiel, Madeline Strasburg and Monica Vidoni.
Three of the seniors were among the statistical leaders.
Strasburg finished with eight kills, five aces and 22 digs; Kiel had seven kills, three aces and 18 digs; and Hammer added 15 kills and two blocks.
Sophomore Valen Trujillo recorded 31 digs, and freshman setter Lauren Rose dished out 27 assists.
