Port Townsend won its first game of the season at the expense of the Coupeville High School boys basketball team, defeating the visiting Wolves 60-51 Tuesday, Jan. 6.
The Redhawks (1-1, 1-7) jumped on Coupeville (0-2, 3-7) early, leading 14-5 after one quarter.
“That’s what happens when you don’t show up ready to play,” coach Anthony Smith said. “It was just bad, bad. If you go in underestimating a team, they will beat you.”
After falling behind early, the Wolves made several runs, Smith said, but a foul, turnover or missed shot kept Coupeville from taking the lead.
The Wolves narrowed the gap to “one or two” in the fourth quarter, Smith said.
Fouls played a big role in the game, according to Smith, and the Wolves had three players disqualified.
“It was one of the most physical games I have ever seen,” Smith said. “With that being said, they seemed to only call the ticky-tack fouls.”
Port Townsend led 29-21 at halftime and 44-35 after three quarters.
Wiley Hesselgrave and Aaron Curtin scored nine points for Coupeville. Aaron Trumbull had eight, Ryan Griggs seven, Joel Walstad five, Risen Johnson four, C.J. Smith three and Gabe Wynn three.
Griggs grabbed nine rebounds and Hesselgrave eight. Walstad added four rebounds and four steals.
“It’s my job and Dustin’s (assistant coach VanVelkinburg) job to get these guys turned around,” Smith said.
He noted his team shouldn’t have any trouble getting ready for its next game, a showdown with neighbor South Whidbey (3-7) at 5:15 p.m. Monday, Jan. 12, in Coupeville.
The Falcons beat the Wolves 74-47 Dec. 2 in Langley.
