The renovation of Oak Harbor High School’s vacant career and technical buildings is projected to cost about $6.3 million, Project Manager Mitch Romero said Monday.

Last June, the school district embarked on this project to convert the existing wings into a new maintenance facility.

The current maintenance buildings on Midway Boulevard were in “extreme states of deterioration,” according to an architectural study.

The $6.3 million is only an initial budget, Superintendent Rick Schulte said, and funding sources will fluctuate due to the bond market and what funds are remaining from the high school modernization project.

For example, interest earnings from the bond have recently dropped from 4.5 percent to less than 1 percent.

The former CTE buildings, also called the C and D wings, will house maintenance, grounds and Information Services.

It’s combined with a project that will also utilize the currently unused north field for athletic purposes.

Construction is set to begin in 2010.
