A 29-year-old Oak Harbor man planned to shoot a neighbor woman with an assault rifle, according to documents filed in Island County Superior Court.

Prosecutors charged Christopher Altman Sept. 28 with attempted assault in the second degree with a deadly weapon, harassment — threats to kill, and unlawful possession of a firearm in the second degree.

Altman pleaded not guilty Oct. 7. He’s out on $10,000 bail.

Oak Harbor Police Officer Jim Hoagland responded to a weapons complaint on SE Pasek Street Sept. 25.

According to Hoagland’s report, Altman was drinking in his neighbor’s garage with a man and his girlfriend. After the man went to bed, Altman made sexual advances toward the 27-year-old woman, the woman claimed.

Altman refused to go home, so the woman went next door and got Altman’s wife. After many angry words, Altman went home with his wife.

Altman retrieved an AK-47-style rifle and told his wife that he was going to shoot the neighbor woman, Hoagland wrote. Armed with the gun, he walked to the garage to see if he had any bullets, the report states.

Altman’s wife ran to warn her neighbors that Altman was armed and threatening to shoot the woman. His wife then grabbed her kids, her mother-in-law and drove to safety.

Hoagland wrote that the neighbor man grabbed his own gun and stopped Altman. He pointed the gun at Altman, told him to drop his rifle and held him on the ground until the police arrived, the police report shows.

Altman admitted to Hoagland that he was armed, the report states. Altman also claimed his neighbor “pistol whipped” him.

Court documents state that Altman was previously convicted of a domestic violence crime, which means he’s not supposed to own a firearm.
