Robert Dougher

Robert Joseph Dougher, 75, 27-year resident of Oak Harbor, died Nov. 30, 2004 at Careage of Whidbey.

Mr. Dougher was born in Scranton, Pa., April 18, 1929, to Joseph Dougher and Anna (Francis) Dougher. He was raised in Scranton, where he graduated from high school. Following graduation, he entered the U.S. Navy, and served his country in both the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. As a career Navy man, he served under Admiral Zeck at Sand Point Naval Air Station and was head of security at Whidbey Island Naval Air Station. Robert also was a regional Navy recruiter in Casper, Wyo., for a number of years. He retired as a master chief petty officer (BTCM, E-9) while at NAS Whidbey.

Robert was married to Shirley A. Bowe May 9, 1953, in Burnaby, B.C. They moved to a number of duty stations around the world, eventually coming to Oak Harbor in 1977. Robert was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, Whidbey Island Chapter 47. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and playing poker.

Robert is survived by his wife, Shirley, at home in Oak Harbor; four children, Joline Baker and husband Mark of North Bend, Robert Gregory Dougher and wife Danya of Irving, Texas, Karry Lynn Whitaker of Mountlake Terrace and Laurann K. Weidenbach and husband Mark of Oak Harbor; seven grandchildren, Melissa, Justin and Jillian Dougher, Kyle Dougher, Kayanna and Trisha Baker, Kyle Weidenbach and Angela Elliott; two great-grandchildren; one sister, Candace Catalano of Phoenix, Ariz.; also, numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one sister, Joan Duncan, (who lived in Charleston, S.C.) in 2004 and by his parents.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 12721 – 30th Ave. N.E., Suite No. 101, Seattle, WA 98105. Arrangements are under the direction of Burley Funeral Chapel.
