It took two days for two backhoes to tear down the old Coupeville High School.

The 64-year-old high school came down Tuesday and Wednesday. All that remains of the old building is piles of brick, wood and metal that workers will remove from the site.

The building demolition provided quite a show for onlookers, many of whom stopped by and watched the demolition Tuesday afternoon.

Cars lined both sides of the street as workers, in backhoes, tore down the structure.

“It was like everyone in town was here,” said Gary Goltz, construction manager for the Coupeville School District.

For the preschoolers at the nearby Ebey Academy, the demolition provided something they had never seen before.

“They though it was the most amazing thing ever. The boys were glued to the window,” said Konni Smith, director of the Ebey Academy. She added that some of the children were betting which part of the building would come down next.

The demolition provided one last chance for residents, many of whom graduated from Coupeville High School, to see the building.

Goltz said the demolition went flawlessly. When it came time to demolish the side nearest to the Performing Arts Center, one backhoe pushed the top of the wall, while the other one undercut the wall.

“I’m amazed at the skill and capacity of those drivers,” said Marshall Bronson, who watched the demolition Tuesday from his bed and breakfast located across the street from the high school.

The last piece of the high school to come down was the chimney. Goltz said because there was so much interest in seeing it come down, he told interested spectators that it would be demolished at noon Wednesday.

Once the rubble is removed from the site, a courtyard will go in place of the new high school building. That courtyard will use bricks that were set aside from the old building.

With the demolition complete, people can now see the new high school that is scheduled to be ready in time for the first day of school. School officials are planning a dedication to celebrate the new high school. However, a date hasn’t been set yet.
