Rodrick Rumble, a 2008 Oak Harbor High School graduate, signed a free agent contract with the Indianapolis Colts Saturday, April 27.

Rumble will report to the Colts’ rookie camp May 9.

Rumble was a three-sport star at Oak Harbor High School. As a junior receiver he helped lead the Wildcats to the 2006 Washington state high school 4A football title. He also was Oak Harbor’s leading scorer in basketball and placed third in the state in the high jump for the Wildcat track team.

Rumble went on to a record-setting receiving career for the Idaho State University football team. He established school records his junior and seniors seasons and finished as the Bengals’ all-time receiver with 223 catches for 2,863 yards. Rumble was a first team, all-Big Sky selection and earned several all-American honors.

He said he was told he might be a late-round draft choice, but wasn’t nervous as the rounds ticked off and his name wasn’t called. Immediately after the draft, he was contacted by several teams. After going over his options with his agent, he chose Indianapolis.

The Colts had shown interest in him for several months, and he often talked with their scout, Rumble said.

“With their personnel and with me being a bigger receiver, it was a good fit,” he said.

As his college career developed, he believed he had the ability to play professional football.

“I felt if I was healthy, I could compete,” Rumble said.

Upon completion of his career at ISU, his agent arranged for him to spend seven weeks at Athletes’ Edge, a special training facility in Florida, to prepare for a professional career.

“Now I’m going to work hard and make the most of it,” Rumble said.

He added, “I’m just blessed. I thank God for my abilities and my maturity as a football player.”

He said many people had a role in his development as an athlete, among them his parents, Roosevelt and Theresa Rumble; Anthony Tucker, his position coach his junior year at Idaho State; Dave Ward, his high school football coach; and Mike Washington, his high school basketball coach.

Roosevelt Rumble said, “We knew with his athletic ability as a young boy he would do something spectacular some day. Me and his mom are very proud of him. We are even more proud of his education.”

Rodrick Rumble graduated from ISU with a degree in mass communications.
