The Oak Harbor Knights of Columbus, John E O’Brien council no. 3361, along with the John E O’Brien Charitable, Religious and Education organization, awarded scholarships to students from Oak Harbor and Coupeville school districts.

Coupeville High School’s Anna Dion is receiving the Don Goodwin Memorial scholarship for $3,000.

Oak Harbor High School’s Grace Chargualaf will receive the Del Swatosh Memorial for $1,500. Trina Dequitado, also from OHHS, will receive the Jack Newman, Jr. Memorial scholarship for $1.500.

Dion said her goal is to attend medical school and become a bio chemist and, hopefully one day, get a commission and serve aboard the USS Mercy, a dream she’s had since visiting the ship as a grade school student. Dion is graduating number one in her class in Coupeville, where she participated in the Science Olympiad and received many awards. She has volunteered many hours in the community helping older residents and attends St Mary’s Church in Coupeville. Chargualaf said she plans to attend Western Washington to pursue a degree in neuroscience with the goal to eventually become a neurosurgeon. At OHHS, Chargualaf was on the girls swim and wrestling teams.

She was also active with the NJROTC program and a member of the drill team. She attends St. Augustine’s Church, where she has been active in the youth programs and as an altar server.

At OHHS, Dequitado was active in the cultural club, Key Club and the tennis program.

Dequitado said she plans to attend Skagit Valley College and, eventually, the University of Washington to get her bachelor’s degree in nursing. Her eventual goal is to get a commission in the nursing program with the U.S. Navy.Dequitado attends St, Augustine’s, where she has been an active as a altar server, choir member and officer in the youth council.

The Knights of Columbus is a global Catholic fraternal service order. Membership is composed of practicing Catholic men. The Oak Harbor council is led by Paul Brewer, current Grand Knight.
