School board gets energy boost

If energy is what the Coupeville School Board is looking for in a new student board representative, it’s no wonder Bree Daigneault was appointed on the spot.

Daigneault interviewed for the position at a school board meeting late last month and was approved shortly afterward. She was overjoyed by the news and ecstatic when it was mentioned that she’d be getting a nameplate like the rest of the board.

“I liked her enthusiasm,” said board member Venessa Matros. “She likes to communicate. I think she’ll have that high energy to bring us information. She’s not afraid to reach out and get the information from the kids.”

Daigneault comes with impressive credentials. She is president of Coupeville’s junior class, carries a 3.85 grade-point average, is involved with school drama productions and plays soccer and tennis.

Her voice already is heard around campus. She does the school’s morning announcements.

When she attended the Nov. 23 school board meeting, she listened intently to discussions on topics that ranged from graduation requirements to school schedules to study halls.

“I was actually pleasantly surprised with what I heard,” Daigneault said. “I wasn’t aware of all the topics that they touched on, so now I’m even more excited to add a student perspective.”

Daigneault will replace Sebastian Wurzrainer, whose one-year term will end this month. Coupeville’s next school board meeting is Dec. 21 when the torch will be passed on to Daigneault.

Coupeville Superintendent Jim Shank said that Wurzrainer did a great job serving in a capacity that keeps the board apprised of how students are feeling.

“It helps us keep grounded with what the students are thinking at the school,” Shank said. “We want their input. We want their feedback. That helps us stay attuned to those things that are of their interest. We have our interest and our vision. Well, you can’t forget your clientele.”
