Hopes for a second consecutive trip to the Junior Legion AA state baseball tournament came to an end for Oak Harbor Friday night at Skagit Valley Dream Field in Mount Vernon.

Sedro-Woolley eliminated Oak Harbor 8-7 in a tightly contested loser-out district game.

“It was an outstanding and exciting game,” Oak Harbor head coach Jim Waller said. “Both teams played well, made some great defensive plays and mounted comebacks.

It was one of those games it was too bad one of the teams had to lose.”

Oak Harbor fell behind 5-0 after three innings, but didn’t give in. The Wildcats tied the game in one inning, rallying for five runs in the third. At one point during the rally Oak Harbor produced five consecutive hits that were capped by an RBI double off the left field wall from Matt Lambert.

Behind clutch RBI singles from Brendan Kays and Marshall Lobbestael, the Wildcats took their first lead in the fifth inning, 7-5.

Errors, which plagued Oak Harbor in its only other loss of the tournament earlier in the week, came back to bite them once more on Friday. A miscue in the sixth allowed Sedro-Woolley to tie the game, 7-7, before they pushed across the winning run in the bottom of the seventh.

Oak Harbor ended its Junior Legion AA season with impressive 21-11 overall record. They were 10-4 in league play.

The strong season just missed matching last year’s state tournament appearance, which was the first ever in the 15-year history of Oak Harbor’s American Legion program.

“The performance of our kids exceeded my expectations, which is a testament to their hard work and dedication,” Waller said. “We received contributions from everyone in the lineup and improved play by most.”

Stanwood, Everett and Burlington all earned bids to the state tournament, which takes place this weekend in Spokane.
