Sedro-Woolley overcame a strong pitching performance by Central Whidbey’s Savina Wells to defeat the Coupeville club 7-4 in the opening game of the district 9/10 softball tournament at Rhododendron Park Tuesday, July 5.
The teams continue the best-of-three series at 6 p.m. Wednesday, July 6.
Wells struck out 13 Sedro-Woolley batters and gave up only two hits in the six-inning game, but Sedro-Woolley combined a few walks, stolen bases and CWLL miscues to score in all but one inning.
Sedro-Woolley’s leadoff hitter walked and come around to score in the first inning, then Central Whidbey came right back to score twice in its half.
With two outs, Wells singled, Allie Lucero walked and Alena Osborne singled to put the Yellow Jackets up 2-1.
Sedro-Woolley reclaimed the lead, 4-2, with a run in the second inning and two in the third.
Central Whidbey scored a single run in the fourth on singles by Lucero and Osborne and an error off the bat of Sofia Peters.
After Sedro-Woolley used three walks to get two runs in the top of the fifth, Central Whidbey made it 6-4 when Lucero singled in Wells.
Sedro-Woolley added an insurance run in the seventh to finish the scoring.
