Next week Coupeville schools superintendent Jim Shank will discuss the State of the Schools with a specific emphasis on facilities improvement.
His presentation will be 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 4 in the high school commons.
He said he hopes his presentation will bring awareness to some of the needs of the district in the near future.
While no formal action has been taken, Shank said the board may look at bringing a levy to the voters sometime next year.
A facilities committee has been working for more than a year now on evaluating the district’s building and other facility needs.
The heating and air conditioning systems in both the elementary and middle school need to be replaced; the middle school roof is beyond its lifespan and needs replacement; the plumbing and bathrooms need work in the elementary school; the elementary school parking lot is cracking and needs to be repaved and the school needs a new coat of paint.
There’s also need for the schools’ athletic facilities.
Shank said the track needs work and the district would like to look at putting a restroom out at the sports fields.
“There is desire from the community to have one,” Shank said.
The committee would also like to complete the Engle Field, which holds baseball and soccer fields.
The tennis courts also need resurfacing and the bleachers in the high school gym need to be replaced.
Shank said he will include a slideshow during his presentation to highlight some of these needs.
“It’s time,” he said. “Some of it will fail if it’s not done.”
This meeting will be one of many in the coming months to educate the public.
The committee is working to get estimates on the costs of the various projects, but there is not a total yet on what the district would need to complete the repairs.
Shank said that while he does not speak for the board, he guesses that if the board is to take action to seek financial support from voters through a levy it would be in early 2015.
