Prosecutors charged a man accused of shooting and killing his roommate on North Whidbey, according to court documents.

The victim, 40-year-old William Wright, succumbed to his injuries at the scene of the Oct. 11 shooting. The suspect, 38-year-old Bret J. Bartlett, allegedly shot Wright four times with an AR-15 rifle, according to a report by a detective with the Island County Sheriff’s Office.

Bartlett is being held in jail on $1 million bail.

Prosecutors charged Bartlett in Island County Superior Court Oct. 16 with murder in the first degree and felony harassment. The crime was charged with a firearms enhancement.

If convicted of the charges against him, Bartlett could face from 28 years and two months to 37 years and six months in prison under the standard sentencing range. In addition, a firearms enhancement would add five years to a sentence.

The felony harassment charge against Bartlett is for an alleged threat he made against Wright several weeks ago. Wright and Bartlett got into a verbal fight after Wright intervened in an argument between Bartlett and his girlfriend. Afterward, Bartlett got out a rifle and threatened Wright, saying he would shoot him “in the head and chest and not even think twice about it,” according to the detective’s report.

Then on Oct. 11, the woman broke up with Bartlett. Wright, the woman and three men were outside talking. As Wright returned to the shop building, he discovered Wright in the doorway, aiming a gun at him, the report states.

One of the other men rushed over and told Bartlett to lower the gun, but instead Bartlett shot Wright multiple times, the report states. The other man grabbed the barrel of the gun and tried to wrestle it from Bartlett. But while the man was holding the barrel, Bartlett managed to fire more rounds into Wright as he was lying on the ground, the detective wrote.

The roommates were able to wrestle the gun from Bartlett and hold him on the ground until the police arrived, the report states.

Attorney Craig Platt of Coupeville filed a notice that he is representing Bartlett. His arraignment is scheduled for Oct. 28.
