Sightings raise UFO alarm

In late August, Diane Stetner saw something in the sky that she couldn’t identify.

Driving south between Greenbank and Bayview, Stetner looked up and saw big, bright lights.

“The reason why it caught my eye is because I have seen those same type of bright lights in New Mexico,” Stetner said. “They looked exactly the same.”

The bright lights, she said, made news in New Mexico and were labeled as UFOs. That’s right. Unidentified flying objects.

Stetner isn’t the first — or likely the last — person to see unusual lights in the sky over Central Whidbey.

Just before Christmas last year, a couple in the Sierra neighborhood saw something very bright and orangish in the sky.

A Bush Point couple saw something similar in March of 2013.

About 15 years ago, something that looked like crop circles lured UFO enthusiasts to a Coupeville field.

On the National UFO Reporting Center website, there are a few accounts of UFOs being spotted in the skies above the island in the last three years.

One person reported seeing a large, slow-moving bright orb above Oak Harbor on Sept. 27, 2014.

Others claimed to have seen floating lights above Coupeville, on June 19, 2012, Sept. 22, 2012, and Dec. 16, 2013.

Those three reports all mention fast-flying lights.

There are reports on the NUFORC website dating back more than a decade, but they started growing more frequent around 2012.

Stetner’s description of the lights are similar to many of the other examples from the island.

“They were very, very big, very bright,” she said. “There was, I think, three of them. They were spaced really far apart, and yet obviously were together. They didn’t seem to be moving much at all.”
