Tractor Supply Co., a retail store that caters to people who live a rural lifestyle — or who want to — may be opening a store in Oak Harbor.
Tractor Supply Co. put up two “Coming Soon” signs Monday near the former Kmart building off State Highway 20.
Officials for the company remained coy, saying they aren’t releasing information about whether they plan to open a store and where it might be located.
“What we can say at this time is that as a growth-minded company, Tractor Supply Co. is always looking for potential new store locations that are a good fit as far as the target market is concerned,” said company spokesman Rob Hoskins.
Oak Harbor is an especially good fit for the company “due to the part-time and hobby farmers and horse owners in the area,” he said.
Tractor Supply Co. describes itself as “the largest operator of rural lifestyle stores” in the U.S.
Its headquarters are located in Brentwood, Tenn., and it operates more than 1,450 retail stores in 49 states.
The company started in 1938 as a mail order catalog business that sold tractor parts. Today its annual revenues are $5.7 billion.
The company’s customers are farmers, horse owners, ranchers, part-time and hobby farmers, homeowners and tradesmen.
The typical Tractor Supply store is about 15,500 square feet with a similar amount outside. They supply products such as workwear, pet supplies, animal feed, power tools, riding mowers and lawn and garden products, according to its website.
The company says it likes to hire welders, farmers and horse owners.
Tractor Supply Co. currently has stores in Port Orchard, Puyallup, Olympia, Yelm and Monroe.
