“Following Tuesday night’s Oak Harbor School Board meeting, board member Jim Slowik quietly submitted his resignation from the board he has served for seven years. Saying only that it was just my time, Slowik requested that his resignation be effective immediately. Slowik, a vice president at Whidbey Island Bank, has been elected to the volunteer board twice and last served as its president in 1999.The remaining board members will formally accept Slowik’s resignation at their next regular meeting, Dec. 11. Current board president Kathy Jones said the board will also need to appoint a replacement to fill out the remaining year of Slowik’s 4-year term.Jones praised Slowik, who she said served the district well through good times and bad.I really have great admiration for the service he put into the district, she said. Whoever fills his position will have some big shoes to fill.Slowik said he has had a rewarding tour on the board, but added that he wants to set a different course now.The school board makes policies and builds buildings. I think that’s important and needs to be done, he said. But I really want to get back and work with youth. I get more satisfaction working directly with students.Through the Oak Harbor Rotary Club, Slowik has organized Career Day activities at the high school in years past as well as this year. He also plans to campaign hard for upcoming operation and hot lunch levies and a bond for construction of a new district stadium.I’ll always be an activist, he said.Slowik has three children who have graduated from Oak Harbor High School and one in middle school. He said he feels they have all gotten a good education. In fact, Slowik said one of the best parts of being a school board member was meeting all the people who make the district work on a day-to-day basis.It was getting to know the great teachers and great administrators and all the assistants who work with the kids in the classroom. That’s the part I’ll always remember, he said.Applications for the soon-to-be-open school board position are available at the district office. Interviews between candidates and the board will take place in January. “
