Soroptimist Oak Harbor is hosting a national traveling festival of short films by, for, and about women Tuesday at the Oak Harbor Elks Lodge.
This is the second year the organization has formed a partnership with the Luna Company — known for making Luna Bars — to bring the LunaFest to Oak Harbor.
The festival features six films diverse in style and content, including “Boxeadora,” a film about a female boxer who defies Fidel Castro’s ban on female boxing, and “Balsa Wood,” a light-hearted story of two mixed race siblings visiting their extended Filipino family for lunch.
A synopsis of each of the films is online at lunafest.org
The event is a fundraiser. Soroptimist Oak Harbor sends $300 to Luna, which puts the money toward a breast cancer charity, and the rest of the money raised goes back to local efforts that support women and girls, said Soroptimist Marilee Pad-dock.
This year’s event honors eight Oak Harbor High School girls who completed the Soroptimist “Dream It Be It” program, which gives girls access to professional role models, career education and other resources to reach their dreams.
“We hope as many women as possible attend,” she said. “Last year there were 75. It would be a dream to double that amount this year.”
The event starts at 5:30 p.m. with a reception and raffles and the screenings begin at 6:30. Tickets are $15 at the door.
