South Whidbey has welcomed an Uber driver.
Many on Facebook have expressed excitement and relief at the news that Mike Hetzler, from Freeland, is now offering ride-sharing services to Whidbey residents.
Hetzler said he officially began serving Whidbey Island on Wednesday, Dec. 13. Though he is retired, he said the gig gives him something to do. At the same time, he also saw a need for the ride-sharing service on the island, particularly on the South End. As far as he knows, he is the only Uber driver in this area.
“Everyone I’ve talked to has mentioned it was about time and a great option,” he said.
The Freeland resident is hoping to serve mainly South and Central Whidbey, but he expects to work off-island as well until demand increases, driving as far as Everett or Mukilteo. Additionally, by spreading the word and creating interest, he hopes he won’t have to leave the island to do his job.
“It’s expensive to take an Uber from Freeland to Oak Harbor, but if people want that then I can take them up there,” he said.
Hetzler can fit up to four riders in his car, and he said he might not be available in the evenings unless a trip is arranged in advance. Prospective riders can reach out to him at 360-348-6075.
He said he expects there will be more demand in the summertime, as more tourists visit and more weddings take place on the island.
“I’d like other people to sign up and get the word out so I don’t get swamped in the summertime,” he said.
