Spend holiday dollars at home

Christmas is a season of tradition, including this editorial reminder to Whidbey Islanders to do as much of their holiday shopping as possible right here on the island.

The holiday season is crucial for smaller island businesses that sell much of their arts, crafts and other products during these few weeks before Christmas Day. For businesses that survive on a month-to-month basis, holiday gift-buying is often the difference between success and failure.

Take advantage of the unique shopping opportunities on Whidbey Island, made possible by our large number of creative individuals producing one-of-a-kind crafts and works of art. Remember also that your dollars support the business owners and their employees who help give Whidbey Island its unique, small town character. Coupeville, Langley, Freeland and the Harborside Shops in downtown Oak Harbor all provide unique shopping experiences that deserve the support of the community.

Shopping at home also keeps portions of the sales tax where they can do the most good — right here at home. The county and cities receive a portion of the sales tax to support general expenses, while other portions are earmarked for special projects. For example, the county’s new Juvenile Detention Facility, which will be geared more toward helping troubled teens than punishing them, will be funded almost exclusively by a local sales tax. The local sales tax also provides the bulk of Island Transit’s operating revenues, helping to provide outstanding bus service at no direct cost to the riders. If you spend your money off the island, your dollars are supporting the large, urban counties who don’t need your money nearly so much as does Island County.

There are personal benefits to shopping close to home as well. No traffic jams, no stress, enjoyable scenery between stops, and the pleasure of seeing friends as you make the rounds of local shops. Try it, and you’ll enjoy a Christmas season that’s fun and relaxing, just like in the old days
