The city of Oak Harbor is opening the splash work this weekend in anticipation of hot weather.

Parks and Recreation Department staff members will turn on the water at Shipwreck Shores Splash Park at Windjammer Park on May 13. The boat-themed water feature is a big hit with kids every summer and is a great way to cool down while enjoying the sun.

The park will be open for weekend hours over the next few weeks. Then, on Saturday, June 17, it will open daily for the summer.

The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory for the entire state that goes into effect Saturday afternoon and ends Monday. Meteorologists are forecasting temperatures in the high 80s and low 90s for much of Western Washington by Monday, although the Weather Channel predicts that it will only get into the 70s in Oak Harbor.

“Since many Washingtonians do not have air conditioning in their homes, cooling off can be a challenge, particularly for people with health conditions, the elderly and infants,” the state Health Department reported.

In addition, Sno-Isle Libraries invites people to visit on the local libraries to cool down in the air conditioning and relax with a book.
