Boys basketball refs needed

The W.S.I. boys basketball association is looking for anyone interested in becoming a basketball official.

The first meeting is at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28, at Squalicum High School.

All the association’s other meetings are scheduled for Nov. 4, 18 and 25.

Training for all officials is set for Nov. 29.

Select basketball tryouts Oct. 26

Tryouts for the 2008-09 Oak Harbor select basketball team for boys in grades fifth through eighth are scheduled for Oct. 26 at the Oak Harbor High School gym.

The teams compete in the WesCo travel league against other feeder programs for high schools in the WesCo conference. Additionally, teams play in two or three tournaments. Typically, there are about 25 games in a season.

Practices begin in November and the season ends in early-March.

On Sunday, Oct. 26, fifth-and sixth-grade players go from 1:30 to 3 p.m. and seventh- and eighth-grade tryouts are from 3:30 to 5 p.m.

All players must complete a registration form before trying out.

There will be registration forms available at the tryouts or you can pick one up at either 7-Eleven, Big 5 Sporting Goods or request one by emailing ohyaa

Sign up now for salmon derby

Roche Harbor’s annual Salmon Classic Invitational 2009, billed as the largest black mouth tournament in the world, is scheduled for Feb. 7 to 9.

But if anglers want to enter the competition for a chance at one of the big prizes, they’d better hurry.

The sixth Annual Salmon Classic Invitational at Roche Harbor Marine and Resort is a three-day sport fishing extravaganza that attracts anglers from all over the Northwest and Canada.

With over $25,000 dollars in cash and prizes, this event brings out fishermen from all walks of life to fish the waters around Roche Harbor. Cash prizes include $10,000 for first place, $5,000 for second place and $1,500 for third.

In addition, there will be a $2,000 mystery fish and best boat total weight prize of $1,500.

Also, each angler entered in the competition qualifies for the grand prize drawing, a top-of-the-line sport fishing boat package as a part of the Northwest Marine Trade Assocation Derby Series.

Derby entries are limited to 100 boats with four anglers per vessel at a cost $600.00 per boat (plus sales tax). The entry fee includes moorage and meals.

Last year the derby sold out on Dec. 7, so get your entry fee in now.

Calling all Snowriders

The South Whidbey Parks and Recreation Department announces registrations are now being taken for the Snowrider program.

The adult program is on Tuesdays and the youth half of the program is scheduled for Saturdays.

The parks department has pick ups scheduled for Coupeville and South Whidbey, plus a pick up in Everett on the Tuesday bus.
