The Coupeville High School softball team has all the ingredients for a solid season.
Six letter winners and five starters return, including two all-conference players; the largest turnout in recent years will add depth; a strong set of newcomers will help fill some holes; and the squad is lifted by the enthusiasm of a new coaching staff.
Sophomores Katrina McGranahan and Lauren Rose earned first-team, All-Olympic League honors in 2015 as freshman.
Another sophomore, Hope Lodell, lettered last year as well as juniors Tiffany Briscoe, Jae LeVine and Robin Cedillo.
Reserves junior Kailey Kellner and sophomore Heather Nastali also return.
Three freshmen, Sarah Wright, Tamika Nastali and Veronica Crownover, and sophomore transfer Mikayla Patrick should be in the mix for varsity playing time, according to first-year coach Kevin McGranahan.
Coach McGranahan sees team speed, defense and the club’s unity as its strengths.
“(A goal) for the season is, of course, to win state,” McGranahan said.
In addition, he said, he wants his players “to give 100 percent, play together as a team and have fun.
“I feel like this team can be very competitive if we do those things.”
The club has “really rallied behind this new coaching staff,” McGranahan said, and is “excited to get this season going.”
The team includes 20 girls, which will allow Coupeville to field a junior varsity team for the first time in years.
“I am very happy with the turnout and very proud of these players already, and I am sure we will have a successful season,” McGranahan said.
The Wolves were 7-12 last spring and 5-4 (third place) in the Olympic League.
Coupeville entertains South Whidbey in the opener at noon Saturday, March 12.
