If the Coupeville High School tennis team wants to match last season’s conference championship, it will have to follow a different script.
The Wolves used their depth, which provided a solid doubles lineup, to cruise to a 6-0 Olympic League mark (11-3 overall) in 2015.
“Our weakness is last year’s strength: depth,” coach Ken Stange said. “We often struggled at the top of the lineup last year, with our top doubles team constantly facing off against difficult foes. This year, we turn the tables. Depth will be an issue this season.”
With a small turnout, Stange will have barely enough girls to fill out the lineup.
Regardless, the team’s goal is to “win the league title again; going undefeated is first and foremost,” Stange said. “I also believe that we have a shot to advance players beyond the district tourney to state.”
The team’s strength lies with the returning players, Stange said. The group is led by singles players senior Sydney Autio and juniors Valen Trujillo and Bree Daigneault.
Trujillo finished second in the league singles tournament to since graduated teammate Jacki Ginnings.
Also back are the starting doubles teams of seniors McKenzie Bailey/Jasmine Franklin and sophomores Payton Aparicio/Sage Renninger.
Aparicio and Renninger placed third in the 2015 Olympic League tournament.
Key newcomers, according to Stange, are exchange student Julia Borges, junior Kaela Hollrigel and sophomores Maggie Crimmins, Kameryn St. Onge and Makenzi LaRue.
“It is going to be an interesting year,” Stange said. “With so few players, it’s going to be imperative on each team member to pull her weight. Sickness and other things that pull kids away from the court could result in losses. I hope that is not the case.”
The Wolves meet Granite Falls in Coupeville at 3:30 p.m. Monday, March 14.
