The inexperienced Oak Harbor High School boys golf team is working hard to be competitive in the Wesco North.
Head coach John Matzen said, “Aside from Judd (Ford) and Matt (Fikse) we are inexperienced. We have lots of work to do. After one week of practice, attitudes are good and practice habits are good. We just hope to make steady improvement through the season.”
Ford, a junior, and Fikse, a senior, are Oak Harbor’s only returning lettermen.
Ford was second team all-Wesco in 2009 after he placed eighth in the league tournament and 10th at district to earn a trip to the state meet.
Key newcomers, according to Matzen, include senior Dan Klope (who played golf as a freshman and sophomore before giving track a try last spring), junior Greg Martin, junior David Bunch, freshman Austin Fields and freshman Jim Nguyen.
Fields and Nguyen attend Coupeville High School but compete for Oak Harbor because CHS does not have a golf team.
Thursday, March 18, at 2 p.m. the Wildcats host Arlington, Jackson and Sedro-Woolley at the Whidbey Golf and Country Club.
