“State park officials will be back in the area Saturday with their latest master plans for Deception Pass State Park. Their objective is to hear what local residents and park users think of the plans so far.Last summer, the same park planners presented the community with a host of ideas for park development and improvement derived from a design competition. The ideas included large-scale projects such as the construction of a cultural center or new dock as well as less-ambitious enhancements to historic guardrails and playground equipment.For the most part, community members told park officials at the time that they would rather see a minimum of new development that would only encourage more visitors, more traffic and more destruction of the park environment. But planners said the park needs at least some improvements just to keep up with the estimated 5.8 million people who visit its 4,000-acres each year. Nevertheless, they took the suggestions and comments with them for consideration.The latest proposal to be put on the table Saturday is by no means the last. This will be just the first of two public workshops on the concept design phase of the project. During Saturday’s workshop two alternative proposals will be presented. This will be followed by a work session where the planners and public will try to narrow the ideas down to a single concept. That concept will then be presented and refined at the second workshop on Monday, Feb. 12 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Cornet Bay Environmental Learning Center on West Cornet Bay Road.
