A former spelling bee champ will be a new face on the Coupeville School Board.

Andre Stone, a junior at Coupeville High School, was recently named student representative to the school board. He takes over for Mason Luvera.

Stone will have to attend each school board meeting for the next year to enlighten board members about the activities taking place in the district’s schools. He won’t be allowed a vote on the board, however.

He said he first heard about the position during morning announcements. He decided to apply when Principal Sheldon Rosenkrance encouraged him to seek the position.

In addition to his duties on the school board, he is a member of the soccer team and the National Honor Society. He participates in Science Olympiad and volunteers through Big Brothers/Big Sisters while maintaining a 4.0 grade point average. He used to play trumpet in the band, but meeting graduation requirements prevented him from participating this year.

When he was in the eighth grade, he won a regional spelling bee, which earned him a spot in the national spelling bee featured on ESPN. Unfortunately, he was eliminated from the competition in the round before finalists were seen on television.

The student representative to the Coupeville School Board is generally a junior and serves through part of their senior year. Andre Martin, Hayley Ebersole, Hayley Waterman, Mason Luvera and Mason Hughes have also held the student representative position at various times in recent years.

Hughes hopes to attend college somewhere in Washington and major in engineering.
